Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), also known as ALA/PDT, is a treatment performed with a topical photosensitizing agent called Levulan® that is applied to the skin and then activated with light. These treatments remove sun-damaged, precancerous spots, improve fine lines, blotchy pigmentation, minimize pores, treat rosacea and improve the appearance of acne scars.

How does it work?

The skin is cleansed and exfoliated and then the Levulan® cream is applied evenly to the area to be treated. It can be left on the skin for up to an hour.

It is then removed and a light-based treatment is used on the area that needs correction. A topical anesthetic is sometimes applied for added comfort.

How many treatments will I need?

A series of three of more treatments performed 2-4 weeks apart is often recommended for maximum effect. Some skin conditions respond with a single treatment. Additional treatments can be performed as needed.

What are the side effects?

Some peeling, swelling and redness can occur up to seven days following treatment. Pigmentation spots can become temporarily darker and then peel off, leaving the skin smooth and even-toned. A sun block must be used to protect the treated area.

The use of sun screen is recommended on any treated areas exposed to the sun. As always, it is a good idea to limit your sun exposure.
